Yesterday at the tournament: Celebrating the impact of Title IX

Three Yale-affiliated experts took part in a symposium at the New Haven Open at Yale titled “Girls High School Sports in Connecticut: Title IX, Celebrating 40 Years of Inspiration.”

The event, sponsored by Aetna, was attended by female high school athletes from across Connecticut, as well as school administrators, athletic directors, and others.

The panelists discussed how Title IX has influenced them and the challenges that still exist for young women who want to be successful in the professional field. They also offered advice to the young women about how to achieve personal and professional success.

“Sportscenter” anchor Cindy Brunson moderated the panel, which included: Kathryn Henderson, director of school and community initiatives at the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University; Meghan McMahon, former head coach of Yale women’s tennis; Karissa Niehoff, deputy executive director, Connecticut Association of Schools, Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference; Kathleen Stroia, senior vice president of sport sciences & medicine and transitions, World Tennis Association; and Dr. Karen Sutton, assistant professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yale University School of Medicine.
