Yale’s Ernesto Zedillo has moved up in the ranks of Global Thought Leaders, a listing compiled annually by the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute (GDI) and the WorldPost.

Ernesto Zedillo

Zedillo is the Frederick Iseman ’74 Director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization; professor in the field of international economics and politics; professor of international and area studies; and professor adjunct of forestry and environmental studies. This is the second year in a row that Zedillo appeared on the list; his ranking is number 18, up from number 73 in 2014.

Utilizing software developed by Peter Gloor, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, GDI and the World Post identified “the most important pacemakers of the global conversation.” The software scans major international newspapers (such as the New York Times, the Guardian, and El Pais), the blogosphere, Twitter, Baidu, and YouTube, among other media outlets. It calculates and ranks individuals’ positions within networks of people talking with and/or about them.

Other individuals on the list and their ranking include Edward Snowden (5), the Dalai Lama (8), and Henry Kissinger (11). Pope Francis is ranked at the top of the list.

A graduate of the Natìonal Polytechnic Institute in Mexico, Zedillo earned his M.A. and Ph.D. at Yale. After serving in several senior government positions in Mexico, he ran for the presidency and won. He served his country as president from 1994 to 2000.
