New clues to the genetic roots of hair pulling and skin picking

Conditions marked by the urge to pull one’s own hair or pick one’s skin — trichotillomania and excoriation disorder, respectively — are painful afflictions that often run in families. A new Yale study involving 100 families found a genetic link between these conditions and obsessive-compulsive disorder, which could point the way to treatments.
