Bhramar Mukherjee appointed the Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Biostatistics
Bhramar Mukherjee, a leader in the field of public health statistics and data science who recently joined the Yale faculty, has been appointed the Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Biostatistics. The appointment, which began on Aug. 1, is for a term of 10 years, renewable by the dean of the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH).
She joined the YSPH faculty last month as the inaugural senior associate dean of public health data science and data equity. She assumed the Lauder chair previously held by Paul Cleary, the school’s former dean.
Mukherjee, who is also professor of chronic disease epidemiology at YSPH, holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Statistics and Data Science in Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and is affiliated with the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale and the Institute for the Foundations of Data Science. She also serves as a fellow of the Benjamin Franklin College.
A leader in the field of biostatistics — with pioneering contributions in the integration of genetic, environmental and healthcare data — her research interests include analysis of electronic health records, studies of gene-environment interactions, shrinkage estimation, data integration, and assessment of multiple environment pollutants. Her collaborative contributions have focused on cancer, cardiovascular diseases, COVID-19, exposure science, environmental epidemiology, and reproductive health. The recipient of numerous awards and accolades for her innovation and leadership in data science, she is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2022. She is an overseas fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge where she holds a senior honorary visiting fellow appointment in the Biostatistics unit.
In her new role at YSPH, Mukherjee will develop and realize a strategic plan for public health data science and data equity that will enable transformative research in the face of quickly changing methods, technology, and societal shifts. She will also work to elevate YSPH’s education programs in this field, with a goal of enhancing the pipeline of diverse scholars in data science. Additionally, representing the school’s commitment to global public health, she will support and create international partnerships that enhance the global practice, teaching, and science of public health data science and data equity.
Mukherjee, who earned her Ph.D. in statistics from Purdue University, came to Yale from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where she was the John D. Kalbfleisch Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics, the Siobán D. Harlow Collegiate Professor of Public Health, and the first woman chair of the Department of Biostatistics. She also served as assistant vice president for research, coordinating a plan for university-wide research data strategy.
