Yale College senior Jack Miller is one of 16 students nationwide to be awarded a Churchill Scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year.

Churchill Scholars, selected by the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States, support one year of master’s degree study at Churchill College in the University of Cambridge. The awards are given to American students in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering.

The award covers full tuition, a stipend, travel costs, and the chance to apply for a $4,000 research grant. This year’s scholars were chosen from 121 nominees from 75 participating institutions.

Miller is pursuing a combined B.S. and M.S degrees in pure mathematics at Yale. Last year, he received the George Beckwith Prize in mathematics and is currently working with Richard Kenyon, the Erastus L. Deforest Professor of Mathematics in Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, on an undergraduate thesis related to dynamical systems that encode elementary expressions for the class number of an imaginary quadratic field. He has also contributed to research papers through summer programs at Williams College and the University of Virginia.

At Yale, Miller has served as a peer mathematics tutor for incarcerated people through the Yale Prison Education Initiative. He also plays tenor and bass trombone, as well as euphonium, and was a member of the Yale Concert Band. At the University of Cambridge, he plans to complete Part III of the Mathematical Tripos, which confers a Master of Advanced Study in pure mathematics.

Churchill College, a predominantly science and technology college, was established in 1960 as a national and commonwealth memorial to Sir Winston Churchill. The scholarship fulfills Winston Churchill’s wish that there always be American students of the highest caliber at the college that bears his name. Yale students who wish to apply for the Churchill Scholarship must be nominated by the university. Deadlines are in early November for the campus nomination process, which is run through the Office of Fellowships and Funding.
