Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a pioneer in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, was recently appointed the Frank F. Kanthak Professor of Surgery (Plastics).

He is also the division chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine.

Pomahac received his medical degree from the Palacky University School of Medicine in the Czech Republic. He then completed a two-year research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston, after which he remained at the BWH to complete his general surgery preliminary years and continued with training at the integrated Harvard Plastic Surgery program.

After completing his surgical training in 2004, Pomahac stayed at BWH to begin his academic career. He rose through the ranks rapidly, achieving the rank of professor in 2017. At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Pomahac was the Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Distinguished Chair in Surgery, the medical director of the Burn Center, the director of the Plastic Surgery Transplantation Program, and co-director of the Center for Facial Restoration.

Pomahac came to Yale School of Medicine in 2021. His clinical work includes microvascular tissue transfer, particularly in breast reconstruction, following treatment for breast cancer as well as facial reconstruction and esthetic surgery. Pomahac is an active leader of the facial transplantation program across the country. His team performed the first three full-face transplant procedures in the United States, and the first successful bilateral upper extremity transplantation in the Northeast. With the overall 10 face transplants and four bilateral upper extremity transplants, he has the largest experience in the world. He is the current president of the American Society for Reconstructive Transplantation and immediate past chair of the VCA (Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation) Committee at the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
