Helen Hadley Hall to close in 2024

The Helen Hadley Hall dormitory, which in 1959 became the first residence hall on the Yale campus for female graduate students, will be decommissioned and closed in the summer of 2024, Yale announced today.

Located at 420 Temple St., Helen Hadley now serves all genders and houses many first-year and international students.

The decision to close the dormitory reflects changing preferences among students for the amenities of apartment-style living rather than for dormitory lodgings, and also the age of the facility, the Yale Graduate Housing Office said in a message to graduate and professional school students.

To replace the beds at Helen Hadley, Yale Graduate Housing and University Properties will work together to provide alternative accommodations. Graduate and professional students will be given priority, the message said.

“These replacement units will upgrade the graduate and professional residential experience from a dorm setting to apartment-style living and will be close to campus, priced affordably, and have furnished and unfurnished options,” it said. “Other features will include a roommate matching option, bursar billing, and graduate community programming. Some units will have one-year residency limitations to prioritize capacity for incoming first-year and international students.”

Leasing for Helen Hadley Hall and University Properties units for the 2023–2024 academic year will continue as usual, the graduate housing office said. More information will be available in the coming months.
