Smita Krishnaswamy, associate professor of genetics and computer science at Yale, has been awarded a two-year, $75,000 Sloan Research Fellowship to advance her work.

The fellowships are awarded in eight scientific and technical fields: computer science, neuroscience, physics, economics, chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, mathematics, and Earth system science.

Fellow scientists nominate candidates for the fellowships. Winners are selected by an independent panel of senior scholars on the basis of a candidate’s research accomplishments, creativity, and potential to become a leader in their field.

There were 128 fellowships awarded this year to U.S. and Canadian early career scientists and scholars whose achievements and potential identified them as rising stars in their respective fields.

Krishnaswamy’s Yale lab works at the intersection of machine learning, applied math, and signal processing to develop representation-learning and deep learning methods that enable exploratory analysis, scientific inference, and prediction from big biomedical datasets. Application areas of her research include immunology, immunotherapy, cancer, neuroscience, developmental biology, and health outcomes.

I am honored to receive this fellowship and the recognition it shows of my work, which is interdisciplinary and doesn’t fall neatly into a specific field,” Krishnaswamy said.

She is affiliated with the applied math program, computational biology program, the Yale Center for Biomedical Data Science, the Yale Cancer Center, and the School of Engineering & Applied Science.

Since the first Sloan Research Fellowships were awarded in 1955, 129 Yale faculty members have been recipients.
