On Veterans Day, we recognize and honor those who have served in the U.S. military, including the thousands of Yalies who have worn the uniforms of the armed forces. From the generations of Yale alumni who served in the past to today’s student veterans, we are deeply grateful for their courage and sacrifice. They have made the world a safer place, and they enrich the Yale community every day.
Veterans Day virtual ceremony
Yale’s annual Veterans Day programming honors alumni, students, faculty, and staff of the university community who have served our country. This year’s video program includes remarks by President Peter Salovey and Yale College student and U.S. Marine Corps member Allegra Pankratz ’21, as well as a benediction by University Chaplain Sharon Kugler.
Music includes the Yale Concert Band and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point Band performing the Armed Forces Medley, a collection of the five branches’ official songs.
‘Veterans Day: Pursuing Excellence in the Military and at Yale’
Yale has a proud tradition of involvement in, and ties to, military service. Through programs including the Warrior-Scholar Project, the Yale Veterans Network, and the Yale Veterans Association, the university warmly embraces its veterans, as well as those who are actively serving in the military and those who participate in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. For this Veterans Day podcast, President Salovey talks with three undergraduates in the Eli Whitney Students Program — James Hatch ’23, Andrew Nguyen ’22, and Allegra Pankratz ’21 — about serving their country and finding community at Yale.
Student veterans in their own words
In honor of Veterans Day, YaleNews caught up with two student veterans and an active duty soldier currently enrolled at Yale College, and asked them about their pathways from the military to Yale, how their military service shaped them, and how that experience strengthens the entire Yale community.
