Literary critic and poet to discuss how to read poems
Stephanie Burt, poetry co-editor of The Nation and English professor at Harvard University, will present a talk about her most recent book, titled “Don’t Read Poetry: A Book About How to Read Poems.” The event will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 in Rm. 211 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St. Burt’s talk, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by Brink: A Review of Books, the Yale Literary Magazine, The Politic, the Yale Women’s Center, and the Poynter Fellowship in Journalism.
Burt is the author of four published collections of poetry and extensive literary criticism. Her book “Popular Music” was awarded the Colorado Prize for Poetry. Her work has appeared in The London Review of Books, The Boston Review, and The New York Times Book Review, among several other publications.
Burt received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard in 1994 and her Ph.D. from Yale in 2000. She taught at Macalester college for seven years before joining the faculty at Harvard in 2007.
The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus distinguished reporters, editors and others who have made important contributions to the media. Among recent Poynter fellows are Julius Krein, Steven Mufson, and Carla Minet.
