Mares received her Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University. Prior to coming to Yale, she served on the faculties of Stanford University and Columbia University, and taught at Sciences Po Paris and the Central European University in Budapest.

The Yale professor is the recipient of fellowships from the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics at Princeton University.
