New York Times writer to offer instruction on op-ed writing

New York Times writer Michael Tomasky will lead a workshop on how to write an op-ed about policy and politics on Wednesday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. The event, co-hosted by the Poynter Fellowship and the Institution for Social & Policy Studies’ Policy Lab, must be registered for in advance.

Tomasky began his career at New York Magazine, where he was a writer for the City Politic column from 1995 to 2002. Later, he was the editor of The American Prospect, a liberal magazine. While he is no longer at the helm of the publication, he remains a contributing editor.

In 2007, Tomasky was named the editor of the recently launched Guardian US, the U.S. offshoot of the British print newspaper The Guardian. In 2009, he became an editor at large at Guardian US. In 2011, Tomasky left Guardian US to join Newsweek/the Daily Beast as a special correspondent.

Tomasky has auathored two books. His second book, “Hillary's Turn: Inside Her Improbable, Victorious Senate Campaign,” details Hillary Clinton’s successful senate campaign. Tomasky additionally has bylines in The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Harper's Weekly, The Nation, The Village Voice, The New York Review of Books, Dissent, Lingua Franca, George, and GQ.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus distinguished reporters, editors and others who have made important contributions to the media. Among recent Poynter fellows are Hilary Rosen, Jose Antonio Vargas, and Lois Connor.
