Theatrical group Sister Sylvester to perform on campus

Artist Kathryn Hamilton will be performing with her group Sister Sylvester on Friday, March 29 during her campus visit as a Poynter Fellow.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 8 p.m. in Rm. 101 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St.

Sister Sylvester is the name of a gender-fluid, feminist performance group that Hamilton founded. The group’s first work was about a person who was part cardboard box. Its last is about the ways politics forces technology to create new hybrids — where computer hardware stands in for a lover’s touch. Sister Sylvester uses classic texts from the theater’s underbelly, and the group’s favorite writers are Genet, Brecht, and Littlewood. The group is based between New York, Texas, and Istanbul. Recent work has toured to Bozar, Brussels; Frascati, Amsterdam; the Arcola Theater, London; The Public Theater and The Park Avenue Armory in New York City; and Bomontiada, Istanbul. Sister Sylvester has been part of the Devised Theater Working Group at The Public Theater in its New Works program, and is in residence at Brooklyn College and at The Park Avenue Armory.

Current collaborators in Sister Sylvester with Hamilton are Cyrus Moshrefi, Kelsea Martin, Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste, Juan Betancurth, Jacqueline Blaska, and Bruce Steinberg.

Hamilton was educated at Columbia and Cambridge universities. Her work has been discussed and reviewed by publications such as The New York Times, the New Yorker, Time Out, and the Village Voice, among others. Also an educator, she has mentored or taught at Columbia University, New York University, and Boğaziçi. She has held residencies in New York, Istanbul, San Sebastian, and Detroit.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus distinguished reporters, editors and others who have made important contributions to the media. Among recent Poynter fellows are Patti Solis Doyle, Rosanne Cash, and Lois Connor.
