Dr. Lauren Sansing, an associate professor at Yale School of Medicine, will receive a prestigious American Neurological Association award later this year. Sansing will be awarded the highest merit offered by the ANA: the Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Award.

To be eligible for the award, candidates must be active members of the ANA, work as assistant or associate faculty members within their first 10 years in the workforce, and pursue a specialty in either neurology or neuroscience.

Each recipient will receive $1000, along with the chance to present at the Derek Denny Brown Symposium during the Annual ANA Meeting. Sansing’s topic will be “Inflammation and Resolution after Intracerebral Hemorrhage — Lessons from Mouse and Man.”

Following her neurology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Sansing completed her vascular neurology fellowship in 2008. Prior to working at Yale, Sansing was an assistant professor of neurology and neuroscience at the University of Connecticut and Hartford Hospital. She currently leads a laboratory at Yale focusing on stroke immunology, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Sansing is also the co-director of the Yale Investigative Neurology Training Program.

My work focuses on the mechanisms by which inflammation contributes to secondary injury after acute brain injury, and, even more importantly, how the inflammatory responses are modulated to contribute to recovery in the brain,” Sansing said.

The ANA will convene for its 143rd annual meeting in Atlanta and present its awards to scholars on Oct. 21-23.
