More than three dozen teams sporting punning names — and costumes to match — competed in the seventh annual New Haven Reads (NHR) Spelling Bee on Oct. 19. The event, held this year in Zhang Auditorium at the Yale School of Management’s Edward P. Evans Hall, raises funds for NHR’s community literacy programs

Author and WTNH-TV anchor Ann Nyberg acted as host and emcee, with judges including State Senator Gary Winfield and Yale Police Chief Ronnell Higgins. The winning team, Team LingBuzz, represented Yale’s Department of Linguistics. Other Yale-affliated teams included The Supremes, representing Future Leaders of Yale; Strictly Come Spelling, representing the Yale Center for British Art; and ANY Bees, representing the Asian Network at Yale.
