Yale Explores to complete East Coast swing with trips to Philadelphia and New York this fall

Yale Explores is back for the fall semester, traveling down I-95 for stops in Philadelphia and New York on Oct. 3 and Oct. 11, respectively.

The innovative program is designed to bring together the greater Yale community by offering an interdisciplinary exploration of the current challenges facing our world. At each event, members of the Yale faculty approach a timely topic from a variety of perspectives, and President Peter Salovey ’86 Ph.D. follows by highlighting the university’s role in these crucial conversations.

The Philadelphia event will be held at the National Constitution Center and focus on planetary health. The faculty roundtable will consist of Daniel Esty ’86 J.D., the Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy; Ann Kurth ’90 M.S.N., the dean and Linda Koch Lorimer Professor of Nursing; and Paul Turner, acting dean of science, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Elihu Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Lincoln Center will host the New York event, titled “Being Human in the Age of Intelligent Machines.” The panelists are Shelly Kagan, the Clark Professor of Philosophy; Laurie Santos, professor of psychology; and Brian Scassellati, professor of computer science and of mechanical engineering and materials science.

Former PBS NewsHour chief global correspondent and current Yale Jackson Institute senior fellow Margaret Warner ’71 will reprise her role as moderator for both events, having also facilitated the inaugural Yale Explores in Washington, D.C., in April.

Each Yale Explores event features a pair of receptions — one prior to the panel discussion and presentation, and one afterward — with those in attendance gathering for appetizers, desserts, and drinks. 

The inaugural event in Washington drew more than 400 attendees to the Newseum for a discussion of the “21^st Century City and Society,” and an additional 200 came out to the Museum of Science in Boston in May to explore “The Quest for Better Therapies.”

In Spring 2019, Yale Explores will head west for events in San Francisco (March 12) and Los Angeles (March 14).
