Yale Rep to stage a ‘powerful’ tale of family and forgiveness
The Yale Repertory Theatre, in collaboration with The Sol Project, will present the world premiere of Charise Castro Smith’s “El Huracán” Sept. 28-Oct. 20.
Directed by Laurie Woolery, the play will be staged at the University Theatre, 222 York St. Opening night is Thursday, Oct. 4.
The play begins when an epic hurricane threatens Miami. A mother and daughter ready themselves for the storm as Abuela takes shelter in a world of memory, music, and magic. “A powerful tale of family and forgiveness, the play reveals what can be rebuilt in the aftermath of life’s most devastating tempests — and what can never be replaced,” the organizers say.
“El Huracán” features scenic design by Gerardo Díaz Sánchez, costume design by Herin Kaputkin, lighting design by Nic Vincent, sound design by Megumi Katayama, projection design by Yaara Bar, magic design by Christopher Rose, puppet design by James Ortiz, dramaturgy by Amauta M. Firmino, technical direction by Philip Alex Worthington, dialect coaching by Cynthia DeCure, casting by Tara Rubin Casting, and stage management by Christina Fontana.
The cast includes Irene Sofia Lucio, Adriana Sevahn Nichols, Jonathan Nichols, Maria-Christina Oliveras, Jennifer Paredes, and Arturo Soria.
Development and production support has been provided by Yale’s Binger Center for New Theatre.
