Mary Chandler Gwin is a dancer and choreographer with intelligence, versatility, and vision. Her work has an intense quality of “listening”: she is a quiet observer of life’s rhythms, with a deep understanding of gesture. Known for her sensitivity and receptivity toward all aspects of the art and her fellow artists, she sees and uses dancers for who they are and how they move. She is also a scientist — she graduates today cum laude and with distinction in her major, Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry — and with her keen attention to the details of phenomena that fall beyond language, she bridges science and the arts, the scientific laboratory and the dance studio. For her ambitious and continually deepening body of dances, and for her future artistic promise, Yale College is delighted to award the Louis Sudler Prize for Excellence in the Creative and Performing Arts to Mary Chandler Gwin.
