Filmmaker will explore race, sports, and documentaries in two talks

Documentary filmmaker Gaspar González ’99 Ph.D. will speak at two events on Thursday and Friday, April 12 and 13 as a Poynter Fellow in Journalism.

González’s first talk, “A Serious Game: Sports, Race, and Documentary,” will take place 7-9 p.m. on April 12 in Rm. 351 of the Loria Center, 190 York St. His second talk, “The Business of Documentary Work: Fundraising, Organization, Production, Distribution,” will be held noon-1:30 p.m. on April 13 in Rm. 105 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St.

González has produced documentary works for multiple networks, including ESPN, PBS, and BBC. Some of his notable films include “Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami,” “The Guerilla Fighter,” and “Havana House,” which won the Audience Award at the 2017 Miami Film Festival.

His most recent project is a documentary titled “A Long Way From Home: The Untold Story of Baseball’s Desegregation.”

González received his Ph.D. in American studies from Yale. He has been recognized for his work by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the American Cinematheque, among other organizations.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus distinguished reporters, editors and others who have made important contributions to the media. Among recent Poynter fellows are Elizabeth Kolbert, Dan Diamond, and Susan Glasser.
