HAVEN Free Clinic offers no-cost health care to the uninsured

Residents of the greater New Haven area with no health insurance can receive medical care at no cost at the HAVEN Free Clinic, a student-run primary care clinic partnered with Yale University.

Located in the Yale Physicians Building at 800 Howard Ave., the clinic is open on Saturdays 9 a.m.-noon. It offers primary care, interpretation, patient education, social services, laboratory services and vaccines, an onsite pharmacy, specialty care referrals, a latent tuberculosis initiative, reproductive health services, and behavioral health services.

The clinic was established in 2005 by medical, public health, nursing, and physician associate students to provide an array of medical services to uninsured patients. The HAVEN in the clinic’s name stands for Health Care, Advocacy, Volunteerism, Education, and Neighborhood.

The clinic’s patients are seen by teams of senior and junior students with guidance from faculty preceptors. Currently, the clinic sees an average of 30 patients per week.

The clinic is funded by gifts from members and friends of the medical school community and philanthropic organizations — notably, the Dr. John B. Goetsch Endowment.
