Yale Rep to stage Suzan-Lori Parks’ ‘astonishing new American odyssey’

The Yale Repertory Theatre will stage Windham-Campbell Prize-winner Suzan-Lori Parks’ “Father Comes Home from the Wars, Parts 1, 2 & 3” March 16-April 7. Opening night is Thursday, March 22.

The Yale Rep production is directed by Liz Diamond and features songs and additional music composed by Parks.

Described by the organizers as the “astonishing” first installment of Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks’ “new American Odyssey,” the play is set over the course of the Civil War. Hero is offered his freedom from slavery in exchange for joining his master in the ranks of the Confederacy. “Father Comes Home From the Wars, Parts 1, 2 & 3,” the organizers continue, “is a devastatingly beautiful epic new work filled with music, wit, and exquisite lyricism.”

A finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, “Father Comes Home from the Wars, Parts 1, 2 & 3” is a co-production with San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre, where it will play April 25-May20.

The cast includes Rotimi Agbabiaka, Erron Crawford, Eboni Flowers, Safiya Fredericks, Dan Hiatt, Steven Anthony Jones, Julian Elijah Martinez, Martin Luther McCoy, Chivas Michael, Tom Pecinka, James Udom, and Gregory Wallace.

The creative team includes Randy Duncan (choreographer), Riccardo Hernandez (scenic designer), Sarah Nietfeld (costume designer), Yi Zhao (lighting designer), Frederick Kennedy (sound designer and music supervisor), Catherine María Rodríguez and Catherine Sheehy (production dramaturgs), Latiana “LT” Gourzong (technical director), Chantal Jean-Pierre (vocal and dialect coach), Rick Sordelet (fight director), and Shelby North (stage manager).

The play contains coarse language.

Father Comes Home From the Wars, Parts 1, 2 & 3” is the second of Yale Rep’s two “WILL POWER!” productions this season. The run includes 10:15 a.m. performances on April 3 and 5, available only to high school groups.
