Edward A. Snyder will step down as the Indra K. Nooyi Dean of the School of Management (SOM) after the 2018-2019 academic year to return full-time to teaching and research, President Peter Salovey has announced.
Snyder, the William S. Beinecke Professor of Economics and Management, came to Yale in 2011 as dean of SOM. “Under his leadership, the School of Management has reached and exceeded several significant milestones, emerging as one of the country’s most forward-looking business schools,” said Salovey, noting that during his tenure, Snyder has helped create “a truly global center for the study of business at Yale.”
Snyder established the Global Network for Advancement Management (GNAM), a network of 32 top business schools, and he created a master of advanced management degree program, a one-year, post-M.B.A. program for students from GNAM member schools. Snyder introduced a global studies requirement for all M.B.A. and M.A.M. students and established the SOM Council of Global Advisors to help steer future priorities. He has also overseen the Yale Center Beijing since its opening in 2014, managing the center on behalf of the university.
“Because of Ted’s vision and initiative, SOM is the most international of all American business schools, preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities of a complex global world,” said Salovey.
Snyder has “nurtured the SOM community while leading it in new and exciting directions,” the President noted. Snyder oversaw the construction and occupation of the Edward P. Evans Hall, SOM’s new, state-of-the-art home. He created a new leadership curriculum for all M.B.A. and M.A.M. students and new foundational courses for Yale master’s level-students and Yale College students. In 2017, SOM launched a master of management studies, a one-year degree program with multiple tracks of study.
Snyder also “invested in people who are leading new and vital aspects of SOM’s curriculum,” said Salovey, noting that Snyder appointed an inaugural director of entrepreneurship programs, SOM’s first director of community and inclusion, and many faculty members.
“Under Ted’s leadership, SOM’s influence, visibility, and national rankings have soared, reflecting the academic excellence of its program. Alumni involvement has increased, and SOM now leads with the highest percentage of its alumni giving annually to Yale out of all the university’s academic units,” the President said. “Ted has also worked to more fully connect SOM to other parts of the university, advancing our goal of a ‘more unified Yale. All these achievements testify to Ted’s vision and commitment in leading one of Yale’s great institutions.”
Salovey also thanked Anjani Jain for his service as acting dean until June 30, noting that Snyder will come back from his sabbatical to serve as dean from July 1 until June 30, 2019.
“I look forward to celebrating Ted’s many accomplishments next year,” Salovey concluded. “For now, please join me in extending heartfelt appreciation to Ted Snyder for his excellent contributions as dean of the School of Management and in wishing him the best as he continues his tenure at Yale.”
