Playwright Tony Kushner to discuss ‘Collaboration and the American Theater’

The Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of “Angels in America” will participate in a conference on collaboration in the theater.

Tony Kushner, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of “Angels in America,” will visit the Yale campus next month to participate in a conference on collaboration in the theater.

Kushner will conduct a conversation with Daphne Brooks, professor of African American studies, American studies, and theater studies, at the Yale Repertory Theatre, 1120 Chapel St. Titled “Collaboration and the American Theater,” the conversation will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9. It is free and open to the public. Seating will be based on availability.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Yale conference on “Copyright and Collaboration in the Theater” and the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library exhibition “The Art of Collaboration.” The conference will explore “connections and disconnections between copyright law in the theater and the actual practice of theater-making.” It is supported by the Yale Law School Payson R. Wolff Lectureship Fund, the Yale School of Drama, and the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. For more information, visit the conference website.

Kushner is best known for his two-part epic drama, “Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes,” which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993. His screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s film “Lincoln” was nominated for an Academy Award and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award, the Boston Society of Film Critics Award, and several others. Kushner is also the recipient of an Emmy Award, two Tony Awards, three Obie Awards, a Spirit of Justice Award from the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, the 2012 National Medal of Arts, and the 2015 Lifetime Achievement in the American Theater Award, among many others.
