Allen has also written feature-length articles and dozens of Talk of the Town stories for the magazine. Before joining the New Yorker, Allen was a contributing writer at the New York Observer, ARTnews magazine, and Modern Painters magazine. She got her start in journalism at the Yale Daily News, where she co-edited the Arts and Living section and wrote a mock advice column called “The Unethicist,” in which she gave terrible advice.
