Peabody Museum to present annual celebration of Latino cultures
Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Yale will perform at this year's “Fiesta Latina.”
The Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History will host “Fiesta Latina,” its 15th annual celebration of Latin American cultures, on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The Great Hall of Dinosaurs will be the setting for music and dance performances throughout the day beginning at 10:15 a.m. with the Mexican group Solfa 5. Mariachi Connecticut will follow at 11:30 a.m. with traditional Mariachi song and dance. Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Yale will take the floor at 12:30 p.m. performing traditional folk dances from several regions of Mexico. Other groups scheduled to perform include African-Arawak Connection, Sabrosura, and Carlos y su Momento Musical.
From 1 to 4 p.m., Curious Creatures will demonstrate a variety of exotic and unusual live animals that visitors can get up close to and touch. Their program has an emphasis on teaching respect and appreciation for living creatures.
For the young visitors, there will be Latin American games, crafts and face painting, and a dig pit where one can find a mineral or fossil.
Specimens and artifacts from visiting Latino groups and the Peabody collections will be on display. Students manning interactive Sci.CARTS in the Bird Hall and North American Diorama Hall will engage visitors with activities related to these exhibits.
Numerous organizations will host additional activities and awareness booths throughout the day, and The Center for Infant and Child Research will offer fun giveaways.
