Free concert to showcase Haitian musical traditions

Musicians from the Yale University Bands will join with members of the Haitian Youth Choir and Chamber Ensemble for part of a free concert showcasing Haiti’s rich musical traditions on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
The concert, conducted by Jean-Bernard Desinat, will take place 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 111 Whalley Ave., New Haven. The event, which is open to the public, is presented by Yale University Bands and the Neighborhood Music School. An offering will be taken to aid the continuation of musical tours by the Haitian youth and their development.
The 30-voice choir of boys and girls will be accompanied by a seven-piece ensemble from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, performing choral and instrumental works of Haitian folk and sacred music.
“This combined concert is an extension of the work that was begun in January when musicians from the bands of Yale and Cornell universities joined with these Haitian musicians to present a concert in Port-au-Prince commemorating the victims of the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2007,” says Thomas C. Duffy, director of Yale Bands and the Neighborhood Music School’s Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra. Musicians from the Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra will also join the Haitian musicians for part of the concert.
