New places and revamped spaces highlighted in updated virtual campus tour
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions has released an updated virtual campus tour that showcases dozens of Yale’s signature spaces. The virtual tour is accessible from anywhere in the world and can be viewed on nearly any internet-enabled device, including mobile phones, tablets, and virtual-reality headsets.
The Admissions Office has offered a virtual tour since 2011, but the updated experience features several newer campus spaces — including Edward P. Evans Hall and the Yale Quantum Institute — and several spaces that have recently undergone extensive renovations — including Sterling Memorial Library, the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art, and Sterling Chemistry Laboratory. Each tour stop includes new photography, videos of Yale student tour guides, and 360 panoramas that allow users to explore a location as if they were standing right in New Haven.
Director of Outreach and Communications Mark Dunn explained that the previous iteration of the virtual tour had been a great success with prospective students, with nearly 500,000 unique users accessing the tour since it launched in 2011.
“There will never be a substitute for seeing Yale in person, but the virtual tour is a great tool to help prospective students from around the world start to imagine themselves at Yale,” explained Dunn. “Yale is always moving forward, and a lot has changed in just the past six years. My colleagues and I wanted to showcase the latest and greatest campus resources, with an emphasis on how they are accessible to undergraduate students.”
The new Virtual Tour is divided into five distinct experiences: a Campus Tour, Science Tour, Engineering Tour, Residential College Tour, and Athletics tour. Combined, they include nearly 40 different buildings and spaces — from the Leitner Family Observatory and Planetarium to the Yale Bowl to the New Haven Green.
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions staff members expressed gratitude to the dozens of faculty, staff, and students who made spaces available for the updated tour. The staff members said they were especially grateful to have access to the state-of-the-art facilities at the Yale Broadcast Media center, where student tour guides filmed the new video clips earlier this summer.
