Dr. Mary Tinetti wins award from the Gerontological Society of America

Dr. Mary Tinetti has been honored with the Donald P. Kent award by the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the nation’s largest interdisciplinary association dedicated to the field of aging.

The Donald P. Kent award is given annually to a member of the GSA “who best exemplifies the highest standards for professional leadership in gerontology through teaching, service, and interpretation of gerontology to the larger society.” The GSA has deemed Tinetti to exemplify those highest standards, noting that “[Tinetti’s] groundbreaking research on falls has earned her an international reputation as an academic leader in geriatrics and gerontology.”

Tinetti is the Gladys Phillips Crofoot Professor of Medicine (Geriatrics) and chief of the Geriatrics at the Yale School of Medicine. She has conducted research on fall injury risk factor identification and fall prevention in older populations She now is conducting studies on clinical decision-making for older adults with multiple health conditions, including net benefit versus harm of common treatments and decision-making based on patients’ own health priorities.

Tinetti has received three other awards from the GSA, of which she is a fellow, the highest level of membership. Additionally, in 2009, Tinetti was awarded a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant for her research and contributions to the field of geriatric clinical epidemiology.
