Community members are invited to watch Yale’s ROTC Air Force cadets and Navy midshipmen as they parade in full uniform at the third annual President’s Review on Thursday, May 4, at 11 a.m. in Lee Amphitheater of Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 70 Tower Pkwy.

Yale President Peter Salovey will serve as the “reviewing officer” at the event, inspecting the officers-in-training as a commanding officer would do in a traditional military review. The midshipmen and cadets, in turn, will salute the president.

Colonel Thomas D. McCarthy, commander of the Air Force ROTC unit at Yale, and Captain Wayne G. Grasdock, commanding officer of the university’s Naval ROTC program, will also be on hand for the ceremony, which will bring together presidents and military liaisons from area colleges and universities, family members and friends of the ROTC Air Force cadets and Navy midshipmen, and members of the Yale community. Those planning to attend are asked to be in their seats five minutes before the ceremony begins.

Awards will be presented to ROTC Naval midshipmen and Air Force cadets — and this year to a Yale senior who is an Army cadet through the University of New Haven’s ROTC program.

There are currently 44 midshipmen in Yale’s Naval ROTC (all from Yale) and 62 cadets in its Air Force ROTC (28 from the university). Yale’s Navy and Air Force ROTC programs were re-established on campus in the fall of 2012 after a four-decade long hiatus that began during the turbulent Vietnam era. While there is no Army ROTC on campus, Yale undergraduates can participate in an Army ROTC program at the nearby University of New Haven.

Students in both the Air Force and Naval units take leadership and other courses as part of their preparation for service and actively train on campus with a residential cadre of military personnel.
