Alumni worldwide electing representative to Yale Board of Trustees

Yale alumni around the globe will cast their ballots in the coming weeks to elect a new alumni fellow to serve on the Yale Board of Trustees, also known as the Yale Corporation.

This year’s nominees are Roger Lee ’94 B.A. and Kate Walsh ’77 B.A., ’79 M.P.H. Lee is a general partner of Battery Ventures, a venture capital firm specializing in the development of innovative technology companies worldwide (read bio). Walsh is president and chief executive officer of Boston Medical Center (BMC), a private, not-for-profit academic medical center that anchors the BMC Health System (read bio).

“The 10 successor trustees and 6 alumni fellows of the Yale Corporation serve as stewards of the institution and reflect the breadth and diversity of our alumni population,” said President Peter Salovey. “They are small in number, yet they carry significant weight in the leadership of the university.”

Candidates are chosen by a nominating committee appointed by the Association of Yale Alumni. The committee is charged with seeking out a slate of candidates who are prominent in their fields, diverse in background, and experienced in leadership. “This year, the committee was particularly mindful of the central role of innovation and entrepreneurship in the university, the changing landscape for academic medical centers, geographic diversity, and representation across the professional schools,” said Kimberly M. Goff-Crews, university secretary and vice president for student life.

“One of Yale’s defining characteristics is its diverse and deeply committed base of alumni who share a love for our alma mater,” said Pulin Sanghvi ’92 B.A., chair of this year’s Alumni Fellow Nominating Committee. “The election of an alumni fellow to the Yale Corporation reflects a wonderful opportunity to add a distinctive perspective to the strategic and operational governance of the university.

“I encourage every alum to recognize the important voice we have in the composition of the Yale Corporation, and to take the opportunity to vote in the 2017 Alumni Fellow election,” he added.

The Office of the Secretary conducts the annual election, which began on April 7 and will conclude on the eve of University Commencement, on Sunday, May 21. Votes must be cast on an official ballot. Election materials and the official ballot have been sent electronically to all eligible alumni for whom the university has an email address; those who do not have an email address and those who have requested hard copies of voting materials will receive a paper ballot.
