Downtown on Feb. 12: carriage rides, ice carving, and Handsome Dan

Downtown New Haven will be the site of an early Valentine’s Day celebration on Sunday, Feb. 12, featuring free horse & carriage rides, ice carving demonstrations, and photo opportunities with Yale University’s mascot, Handsome Dan XVIII.

The program will run noon to 4 p.m. The schedule follows:

Free horse & carriage rides: noon-4 p.m. Pickup locations are at 1000 Chapel St. (across from the New Haven Info Center) and 268 York St. (across from Gant).

Ice Carving Demonstration: 1-3 p.m. A chainsaw-wielding artist will create an ice statue of lovebirds with hearts in front of L’Occitane en Provence and Wave Gallery, at 1046 Chapel St.

Handsome Dan: 2-4 p.m. (ice-carving demonstration of a Handsome Dan figure); 2:30-3:30 p.m. (appearance by Handsome Dan himself) at Broadway Island, 56 Broadway (across from J.Crew, Apple, and Lou Lou).

Shoppers are encouraged to visit the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art (both offer free admission) and to have lunch or dinner at one of the city’s award-winning restaurants during their visit. View The Shops at Yale’s shopping and dining directory.

The city of New Haven offers free on-street parking on Sundays. There are also parking garages 56 Broadway, 40 Dixwell Ave., 255 Crown St., and 161 York St.
