President Salovey stops by YPD cook out to say thanks

Police work is by nature hard, dangerous, and uncertain, and lately it has become even more challenging. With that in mind and to give his officers and staff time to relax and connect with each other, Yale Police Chief Ronnell Higgins recently hosted the first annual Yale Police Department’s Officer Appreciation Cook Out at police headquarters. 

“We wanted to do something for the officers and their families during this time of uncertainty,” said Higgins.

All Yale Police Department (YPD) officers, staff members, and their families were invited to enjoy an outdoor BBQ. Some officers even brought their grandkids. Stationed at the grill was YPD Officer Charlie Hebron, who cooked up hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks, and vegetarian options. There were also homemade sides like salmon macaroni salad and Spanish rice and ice cream to top off the feast.

Many members of the Yale community stopped by to show their support of our officers including President Peter Salovey who chatted with the officers, thanking them for their dedication to keeping Yale’s campus safe. To show their appreciation and support for the officers, the members of the Yale Security Systems Team stopped by with platters of sausage and peppers and ziti from Brazi’s Restaurant. Many of the officers said they were surprised and grateful for the support showed by everyone who participated. Higgins offered special thanks to YPD executive assistant Roxanne Dalton and Officer Hebron who coordinated the event and purchased all the food and decorations.
