The Yale Chapter of the International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) will host its 22nd annual conference at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies from Jan. 28 to 30.
The conference, “Tropical Forests for Sustainable Development: Shaping our Post-2015 Future with Knowledge from the Field” — which will be held at Kroon Hall — will enable field researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to address the role tropical forests can play in achieving the recently adopted UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Coming just four months after a UN summit set the post-2015 agenda for sustainable development, the Yale conference is expected to yield tangible products that will inform strategies to achieve those goals and help tropical forest and development communities define a path forward, organizers say.
This year’s conference will also include shorter presentations and more time for discussion between participants, said Erika Drazen ’17 M.E.Sc., co-chair of the conference.
“This will allow the conference to be more interactive and involve everyone,” she said. “By shortening the talks we were able to accept more participants, including more participants from developing countries.”
The agenda includes keynote addresses by Mirei Endara de Heras, Panama’s Minister of the Environment; Stewart Maginnis, Global Director of the Forests and Climate Change Programme/Nature-based Solutions Group at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN); James Mayers, Head of the Natural Resources Group at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED); and Milagre Nuvunga, Executive Director of the Mozambique-based MICAIA Foundation.
The conference will also recognize the recipients of the ISTF Innovation Prize, which honors outstanding ideas in forest conservation. Winners of the first- and second prizes — which will receive $2,500 and $1,000, respectively — come from Cameroon and Panama.
Additionally, the conference will inform a side event that ISTF is planning at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in September in Hawaii.
