"Greater New Haven would not be the same without Yale and greater New Haven would not be the same without United Way," says Mayor Toni Harp.

Dear friend and neighbor:

Ever since I first arrived — many years ago — to study in the Yale School of Architecture, I have embraced New Haven as a special place, full of caring and committed people.

After I graduated, I stayed and raised my family in the Dwight neighborhood. For over 20 years I worked at the Hill Health Center, and I’ve served as an alderwoman, a state senator, and, now, as mayor.

I’ve seen that New Haven has challenges common to countless other cities. But more importantly, I’ve witnessed an uncommonly abundant civic spirit here — a spirit especially evident in the work of United Way and its partners, including members of the Yale community.

Every day I see how neighbors help neighbors and how New Haven is made stronger when nonprofit organizations, community groups, businesses, and city government work together. We accomplish great things when all of us, institutionally and personally, join forces. United Way provides an especially effective way for all of us to unite and forge lasting solutions focused on education, income, and health.

Greater New Haven would not be the same without Yale and greater New Haven would not be the same without United Way. Moreover, United Way would not accomplish what it does without the support of the Yale community. You and your colleagues make essential contributions to United Way’s success on behalf of children and families throughout the region.

The Yale United Way campaign continues through January. To those who have contributed, thank you! To those who are still considering a contribution, please know your gift will make a real difference for your neighbors.

As a Yale graduate, neighbor, mayor, and a donor to United Way, I am truly grateful for the Yale faculty, staff, students, and alumni who work to make New Haven stronger.

Best wishes for a wonderful new year,

Toni N. Harp ’78 M.E.D.
