Polish journalist Paweł Pieniążek to discuss Russian-Ukrainian conflict

Paweł Pieniążek, a Polish journalist and reporter, will speak at Yale on Wednesday, Dec. 9 as a Poynter Fellow in Journalism.

His talk, “Strange War: Russian-Ukrainian Conflict in the Donbas,” will take place at 1 p.m. in the GM Room of Horchow Hall, 55 Hillhouse Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

In his reportorial work, Pieniążek specializes in Ukraine and Eastern European politics and current events. He is a regular contributor to the Polish online dailyDziennik Opinii, writes frequently for New Eastern Europe, and freelances for Polish radio.

His first book, “Pozdrowienia z Noworosji” (“Greetings from Novorossiya”), is a collection of his on-the-ground writings during his time reporting on the war in Eastern Ukraine. He was one of the first journalists at the crash site of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, the airliner shot down over Eastern Ukraine, and has filed reports based on his extensive local knowledge of the event.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus journalists from a wide variety of media outlets who have made significant contributions to their field. Among recent Poynter fellows are Louise Story, Kamel Daoud, and Susan Dominus.
