Media advisory: Former President Jimmy Carter to speak at Yale Dec. 2

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, will deliver a public address at Yale University on Dec. 2.

The talk will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. at Woolsey Hall. All members of the media must display Yale press credentials and any media cameras or bags must be in place by 1 p.m. prior to an official security sweep. Bags 12” x 12” or larger will not be allowed. Doors will open for seating at 2 p.m.

Members of the media may request credentials by calling the Yale Office of Public Affairs & Communications at 203-432-1333. Credentials must be picked up by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1.

The event will be livestreamed on the Yale YouTube channel.

President Carter will discuss his latest book, “A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power,” published earlier this year. The visit comes at the invitation of Ernesto Zedillo, the former president of Mexico, who is director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. Zedillo and Yale President Peter Salovey will host a question- and- answer session with President Carter after his remarks.

President Carter was elected to office in 1976, and he served from 1977 to 1981. During his time in the White House, President Carter became known as a champion of human rights and an international peacemaker. He negotiated the 1978 Camp David Accords, which called for a formal peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. He also established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China and negotiated the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union — a long-term, comprehensive agreement limiting the development of nuclear weapons.

President Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and is the author of 28 books. In 1982, he founded The Carter Center, a non-partisan and non-profit organization that works to resolve conflicts, advance democracy, protect human rights, and improve health in over 70 countries.

After the talk, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., President Carter will sign copies of his book at the New Haven Lawn Club, 193 Whitney Avenue. For more information on the book signing, please contact R.J. Julia Booksellers at 203-245-3959.
