Samantha Power, the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations and a member of President Barack Obama’s cabinet, will visit the campus as a Chubb Fellow on Monday, Dec. 1.

As part of her visit, Power will give a talk at 4:30 p.m. in Levinson Auditorium, Sterling Law Buildings, 127 Wall St. The event is free and open to the public.

At the U.N., Power works to advance U.S. interests, promote and defend universal values, and address pressing global challenges to global peace, security, and prosperity.

Power is the author of “‘A Problem from Hell’: America and the Age of Genocide” (2002), which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, and “Chasing the Flame: Sergio Viera de Mello and the Fight to Save the World” (2008), the basis for the award-winning HBO documentary “Sergio.” She is also the recent co-editor of “The Unquiet American: Richard Holbrooke in the World” (2011).

Power previously served as special assistant to the president and senior director for multilateral affairs and human rights on the national security staff at the White House. In this role she focused on issues including U.N. reform; LGBT and women’s rights; the promotion of religious freedom and the protection of religious minorities; human trafficking; and democracy and human rights.

Before joining the U.S. government, Power was the Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. She took her undergraduate degree from Yale in 1992, and a law degree from Harvard in 1999.

The Chubb Fellowship was founded with a gift from Yale alumnus Hendon Chubb, and since 1949 has been one of Yale’s most prestigious honors conferred on visiting speakers. The fellowship is administered by the master of Timothy Dwight College, currently Jeffrey Brenzel. The Chubb Fellowship is devoted to encouraging interest in public service. Chubb Fellows spend their time at Yale in close, informal contact with students and make an appearance open to the public. Former Chubb Fellows include Presidents George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, and Harry Truman; authors Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, and Toni Morrison; filmmaker Sofia Coppola; architect Frank Gehry; choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov; journalist Walter Cronkite; and many other nationally and internationally prominent citizens and leaders.
