Marie Claire editor Janet Mock to discuss ‘Representing Realness’

Janet Mock, contributing editor at Marie Claire, will speak at Yale on Tuesday, Nov. 18 as a Poynter Fellow in Journalism.

Mock will give a talk titled “Representing Realness: A Conversation with Janet Mock” at 5 p.m. in Rm. 102 of Linsly Chittenden Hall, 63 High St. 

The event is co-sponsored by the Office of LGBTQ Resources, LGBQT Affinity Group, Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, LGBT Studies, Yale African American Affinity Group, Working Women’s Network, Future Leaders of Yale, Afro-American Cultural Center at Yale, Intercultural Affairs Council, Silliman College, and Yale WorkLife.

Mock, a native of Honolulu, first told her story of growing up as a trans girl in 2011 in Marie Claire. Her memoir, “Redefining Realness,” published in February 2014, was critically lauded. It debuted at number 19 on the New York Times Best Sellers List and was featured on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Live,” “The Colbert Report,” and “Melissa Harris-Perry. “

Mock recently hosted “HuffPost Live” and “TakePart Live.” She was also featured in the HBO documentary “The Out List.”

Her work as a writer, speaker, cultural commentator, and prominent advocate for trans women’s rights has been widely recognized. She has been honored by the Stonewall Community Foundation, GLSEN, Anti-Violence Project, ADOCOLOR Awards and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. In addition, she was named Woman of the Year in 2013 by the feminist website Vitamin W and appeared in OUT magazine’s Out 100 list, the Root 100, the Good 100, the Center for American Progress’ 13 Women of Color to Watch, the Huffington Post’s 23 Inspiring Women Blazing Trails for the LGBT Community, and The Grio’s 100 most influential African Americans.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus journalists from a wide variety of media outlets who have made significant contributions to their field. Among recent Poynter fellows are Natalie Jackson, Seymour Hersh, and Daniel Zalewski.
