Roberto González Echevarría, Sterling Professor of Comparative and Hispanic Literatures, was awarded the Premio de la crítica literaria by the Instituto Cubano del Libro for his book “Lecturas y relecturas: estudios sobre literatura y cultura.”

This is the first time that a Cuban living in exile has received such recognition, and it is the first time that González Echevarría has been published in his home country. The prize will be awarded formally in Havana on Oct. 21.

González Echevarría is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on Spanish and Latin American literature. He was awarded a National Humanities Medal in 2011 for his contributions to Spanish and Latin American literary criticism. A book of his essays, translated into Portuguese as “Monstros e arquivos: textos críticos reunidos,” has just been published in Brazil.
