Yale’s Handelsman sworn in to key U.S. science post

Yale microbiologist Jo Handelsman was sworn in July 2 as new associate director for science at the Office of Science and Technology Policy. Handelsman will help advise President Barack Obama on the impact of science on domestic and international affairs.

Yale microbiologist Jo Handelsman was sworn in July 2 as new associate director for science at the Office of Science and Technology Policy. Handelsman will help advise President Barack Obama on the impact of science on domestic and international affairs.

Obama nominated Handelsman, professor of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, to the post in July of 2013. Handlesman is an expert on the biology of microbial communities and a national leader in improving science education. She also promotes opportunities in science for women and minorities.

Handelsman is on a public service leave at Yale while she serves in the administration.
