Yale and South Korean university will team up for inaugural conference

The Ewha-Yale Conference on “Korean Literature, Art, and Film from 1910 to 1945” — the first ever collaboration between faculty in the humanities at Yale and South Korea’s Ewha Womans University — will take place July 11-12.

The conference, which will take place on the Ewha campus in Seoul, Korea, will focus on the culture of Korea under Japanese occupation before and during the Second World War. The event will feature a group of scholars from the United States, Korea, Japan, and Canada who will present talks on Korean art, literature, and film in Korea from 1910 to 1945.

Yale participants include faculty members Daniel Botsman (history); Aaron Gerow (East Asian languages and literatures/film studies) Youn-mi Kim (history of art), John Treat (East Asian languages and literatures); and recent Yale Ph.D. graduate Naoki Yamamoto (East Asian languages and literatures/film studies).

This inaugural collaboration has been spearheaded by Yale alumnus Eunice Kim, Ewha’s vice-president for international affairs, and John Treat, professor emeritus of East Asian languages and literatures at Yale, who is teaching at Ewha this year. Support for this conference comes from the Ewha Institute for the Humanities and Yale’s Council on East Asian Studies (CEAS).
