Strobel reappointed as vice president for the West Campus

Scott Strobel has been reappointed as vice president for West Campus planning and program development through June 30, 2017.

In announcing Strobel’s reappointment, President Peter Salovey noted that “[U]nder his leadership, the West Campus has continued to develop as an exceptionally strong community of scientists and scholars from around the globe, doing transformative work in the areas of science, medicine, and engineering.” More than 1100 Yale faculty, staff, and students work at the West Campus every day.

During his three-year term, Strobel — who is also professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry — recruited more than 20 science faculty to West Campus, each with a dual appointment in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences or School of Medicine.

He helped to launch six faculty-led scientific institutes at the West Campus with the creation of the Energy Sciences Institute and appointed internationally renowned directors to lead all six. With the help of a transformational gift from Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, Strobel established the Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage — dedicated to improving the science and practice of art conservation — and recruited its inaugural director. As the result of a partnership between Strobel and Dean Margaret Grey, the School of Nursing relocated to West Campus, becoming the first dedicated student body and major educational initiative there.

Strobel also boosted the presence and involvement of students at the West Campus. It is now home to Yale’s International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition student teams, and has provided support to several other undergraduate groups, like the Yale Propulsion Laboratory’s Rocket Launch mission, the Vlock Building project, Yale Bee Space, and Yale’s first Solar Decathlon. In October, the West Campus hosted more than 900 students from around the world for Yale’s first Hackathon. Strobel and his team recently partnered with the Office of New Haven & State Affairs to find a temporary home for Orange’s Peck Place Elementary School at the West Campus after the school suffered water damage — “thus creating the youngest entering class in Yale’s history!” noted Salovey.
