Hundreds of Asians and Asian Americans will return to campus April 11–13 for the inaugural Yale Asian Alumni Reunion, presented by the Association of Asian American Yale Alumni in conjunction with the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) and the Asian American Cultural Center (AACC) at Yale.

Yale’s first Asian alumnus, Yung Wing, graduated in 1854, and this reunion will celebrate his 160-year legacy: There are currently some 15,000 alumni representing the many diverse cultures and perspectives of the Asian and Asian-American community.

The three-day gathering in April will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, cultural showcases, and opportunities for alumni and current students to meet for conversation, mentoring, and networking. The AACC will be open throughout the weekend to welcome returning alumni, and other campus venues will host open houses and special events.

Reunion highlights include keynote remarks from Indra Nooyi ’80 M.P.P.M., chair and CEO of PepsiCo and a fellow of the Yale Corporation, the university’s board of trustees; David Henry Hwang ’83 DRA, Tony Award-winning playwright; Vijay Iyer ’92, pianist and composer and 2013 MacArthur Foundation “genius award” winner; and Gary Locke ’72, former governor of Washington, U.S. secretary of commerce, and U.S. ambassador to China. In addition, over 30 thought leaders, including both Yale alumni and faculty, will present key perspectives and lead discussions in nine areas of interest, ranging from the arts and media, technology, and public service. A full schedule of events can be read online.

The reunion represents the growth of shared interest groups (SIGs) as a key part of alumni engagement at Yale, in keeping with the AYA’s strategic plan “Ambassadors for Yale.” The Association of Asian American Yale Alumni – with five local chapters, a growing social media presence, and events throughout the year – is among the most active SIGs, bringing alumni together across class years, academic degree programs, and geographies.

Early registration for the Yale Asian Alumni Reunion has been strong. All alumni are welcome and are encouraged to register online through March 24. Attendees are also encouraged to use the hashtags #YAAR14 and #YaleAlumni on Twitter and Instagram and to like the reunion Facebook. Alumni who are not able to attend in person are encouraged to follow the events on these social media channels.
