Author, critic, and columnist Michael Kimmelman has been appointed as the 2014 Franke Visiting Fellow at the Whitney Humanities Center for the spring.
Kimmelman will give a lecture titled “The Politics of Public Space” on Wednesday, April 2 at 5 p.m. in Rm. 208 of the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St. The talk is free and open to the public.
Kimmelman, who is the architecture critic and the senior critic for The New York Times, focuses his writing on issues concerning public space, housing for the poor, parks and infrastructure, social equality, and public interest design not only in New York City but also in cities such as Cairo, Medellin, Louisville, and Paris. He spent four years based in Berlin covering Europe and the Middle East as The New York Times “abroad” columnist. A fellow at the London School of Economics, he is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books.
The Franke Visiting Scholars and Artists Program is made possible by the generosity of Richard and Barbara Franke Franke. The creation of this special residential fellowship is intended to ensure ongoing interdisciplinary exchange and creative debate at the Whitney Humanties Center in particular and at Yale in general. The Frankes have also endowed an annual lecture series and the Franke Program in Science and the Humanities at the Whitney.
