Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International, will present the Gruber Distinguished Lecture in Women’s Rights on Monday, Oct. 21 at 4:30 p.m. in Rm. 127 of the Yale Law School, 127 Wall St.

A humanitarian and activist, Salbi started Women for Women International as a grassroots development organization to help women survivors of war re-build their lives. Since 1963, Women for Women International has helped over 315,000 women access social and economic opportunities in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Sudan.
In conjunction with Salbi’s lecture, there will be two panel discussions.
The first, “Voice and Revolution: Gender, Rights, and the Roles of Women in the Middle East,” will take place on Oct. 21. The panel will be moderated by Robin Wright, senior fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace and Distinguished Scholar at the Wilson Center. The panelists will be Ellen Lust, associate professor of political science at Yale; Ambassador Sallama Shaker, Egypt’s assistant minister of foreign affairs for the Americas and visiting professor at Yale Divinity School; and Dalia Ziada, director of the Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies.
The second, “Reconsidering Voice: Agency, Gender, and the Role of Law in Development,” will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 22. This panel will be moderated by Muneer Ahmad, clinical professor of law at Yale, and will include Martha Chen, lecturer in public policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government; and Naila Kabeer, professor at the London School of Economic’s Gender Institute.
Both panel discussions will take place at 10 a.m. in the Law School faculty lounge and are open only to the Yale community.
