Award-winning writer and lecturer Andrew Solomon ‘85 will be the featured speaker and awardee at Neuroscience 2013, an annual symposium showcasing advances in basic and clinical neuroscience, to be held on Saturday, April 6.

The event will take place 8:15 a.m.–1 p.m. in Harkness Auditorium, Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St.

The theme of this year’s event is “Individual Differences, Mental Illness, and Recovery.” There will also be presentations by faculty from Yale’s Department of Psychiatry and Child Study Center on depression, autism, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Presentations are non-technical in nature and geared toward the general public. There will be ample time for questions from the audience. Presenters and clinical experts will make themselves available for “Ask the Expert” breakout sessions.

Admission is free and open to the public, but advance registration is requested. Register online. Mental health consumers, their families, and mental health professionals are encouraged to attend.

Solomon is winner of the National Book Award, and author of “The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression” and “Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity.” He is a lecturer in psychiatry at Weill-Cornell Medical College and a special adviser on issues of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender mental health for Yale University’s Department of Psychiatry.

Neuroscience 2013 is presented by Yale’s Department of Psychiatry, the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DHMAS), in association with the Connecticut Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-CT), and with the support of The Patrick and Catherine Weldon Donaghue Medical Research Foundation.
