Actor Paul Giamatti to deliver Maynard Mack Lecture on April 1

Yale alumnus Paul Giamatti ’89, ’94 M.F.A. will deliver the 22nd annual Maynard Mack Lecture at Yale University at 5:15 p.m. on Monday, April 1, at the University Theatre, 222 York St. The event is free and open to the public.

The Maynard Mack lecture is administered by and endowed through the Elizabethan Club of Yale University. Each year the lectureship brings to Yale a distinguished theater practitioner to speak on a topic of his or her choice. It honors the late Maynard Mack, Sterling Professor of English at Yale, an eminent scholar of Shakespeare, Pope, and other literary figures.

This year’s Mack Lecture by Giamatti is co-sponsored by the Yale School of Drama. He is currently appearing on stage at the Yale Repertory Theatre as the Prince of Denmark in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

His previous Yale Rep credits include Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” and Brecht’s “St. Joan of the Stockyards.” On Broadway, he appeared in “The Iceman Cometh,” “The Three Sisters” (Roundabout Theatre Company), and “Racing Demon” and “Arcadia” (Lincoln Center Theater). His other theater credits include “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” (National Actors Theatre/Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University) and “The Blues Are Running” (Manhattan Theatre Club), as well as productions at La MaMa E.T.C., Playwrights Horizons, Williamstown Theatre Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, and Annex Theatre.

His film credits include “Private Parts,” “The Truman Show,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “The Negotiator,” “Planet of the Apes,” “American Splendor,” “Sideways,” “Cinderella Man,” “The Illusionist,” “The Last Station,” “Barney’s Version,” “Win Win,” “The Ides of March,” “Rock of Ages,” “John Dies at the End,” and “Cosmopolis.” Television credits include “John Adams,” “30 Rock,” and “Too Big to Fail.” Giamatti is a Beinecke Fellow this spring at the School of Drama.
