The other Yale medal-winning graduates, Taylor Ritzel ’10 and Ashley Brzozowicz ‘04, earned their honors — a gold and a silver, respectively — on Aug. 2 while vying in the same race on two competing women’s eight teams: Ritzel for the U.S. and Brzozowicz for Canada. See story.

Cole, who rowed in the third seat in the men’s four, is the first Yale heavyweight rower to capture a medal at the Olympics since 1996.

The four was the last men’s rowing medal event of the 2012 Games. Great Britain took the gold with a time of 8 minutes 3.97 seconds, earning its fourth consecutive Olympic championship in the event. The silver-winning Australian team lost by one second to the British rowers, and the Americans finished third in 6:07.20, well ahead of fourth-place Greece.

Cole’s crew was the only one on the U.S. men’s side to bring home an Olympic medal. The crew included Cole’s former Ivy League foes Glenn Ochal of Princeton and Henrik Rummel of Harvard, as well as national team member Scott Gault.
