Over 160 former Olympians have been Yalies
Yale students and alumni have accounted for some of the blue in the multicolored rings of the Olympics logo.
Since London last hosted the Summer Games in 1908, 169 Yalies have competed, bringing home a total of 108 medals: 53 gold, 25 silver, and 30 bronze. These include gold-medal winners A.C. Gilbert ’1809, the renowned toymaker whose participation in the 1908 Olympics helped revolutionize the sport of pole-vaulting (see story); pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock ’25, who earned first place in rowing in 1924; and attorney Edward Eagan ’21, the only athlete in the history of the Olympics to earn a gold medal in both the Summer and Winter Games — for boxing in 1920 and for bobsledding in 1932 .
In addition, 22 Yale coaches have lent their expertise to Olympic teams during that same period.
Here is a list of the Yale athletes who have competed in the Olympic games and the medals they have won.
