Environmental conference among Divinity School’s summer study programs

The Yale Divinity School will offer an array of courses suitable for clergy, laity, and students during its Summer Study program, which begins June 5-7 with “Religion and Environmental Stewardship.”

Following the symposium will be two five-day sessions of courses: “Bible Study and Interpretation Week,” June 11-15, and “Tools and Timely Topics Week,” June 18-22.

The environmental conference will engage experts from Yale and across the country to address topics such as the greening of seminaries and churches, curricular initiatives in eco-theology, climate change, environmental justice, and preaching and liturgical approaches to environmental stewardship.

Each of the two five-day sessions will include a mix of courses taught by long-standing members of the YDS faculty — including Harold Attridge, Robert Wilson, David Bartlett, Ken Minkema, Jerry Streets, Patrick Evans, and Christopher Beeley — as well as newer members of the faculty, research faculty, Yale staff, or recent Yale Ph.D. graduates.

“Bible Study and Interpretation Week” courses will include, among others, “The Book of Revelation,” “Preaching from the Lectionary,” “The Bible Through Art and Artifact,” and “Reading the Bible Through Literature, Music and Art.” The “Tools and Timely Topics Week” will include, among others, “Augustine’s Confessions,” “The Great Awakening: Context and Text,” and “What’s Christian about Harry Potter?”
